It sounds scary, Graves Disease, but that is the name I have to carry around with me for God knows how long. I was diagnosed back in April 2014. I shall never forget it. It was like there was a me before that time and the me after.
I had a blood test and was called immediately back into the GP when the results returned. Well, I say results returned but the lab couldn’t test my thyroid levels as they were way off their testing range. Which meant there was something very, very wrong with me. I knew something wasn’t quite right but alot of the symptoms that I recognise now I just hadn’t put them all together as being part of my illness.
Here is the list of what I can remember feeling at the time;
- Insomnia
- Heart palpitations
- tremors in my hands and legs
- panic attacks
- intolerance to heat
- night sweats
- out of breath after any normal activity e.g. taking a shower, walking upstairs
- high resting heart rate
- large goiter (swelling in my neck)
- hair falling out
- massive weight loss
- racing mind/ thoughts
- depression
It wasn’t pretty. This was all because my thyroid was producing far too much thyroid hormone. The reason it was over producing was because my immune system had created antibodies against my thyroid.
